Another Photo Request Floods In.

ANOTHER REQUEST FOR FREE PHOTOS HAS FLOODED IN
I received a request for photo's of the Barrowfield area just across the road from Celtic park. Several streets were mentioned, including, Gretna St, Boness St, Buddon St, and Gailes St. Sadly all of the housing in this area is now gone. This photo was taken looking north up Springfield Road towards London Road and Celtic Park.
The piece of open ground on the left is where all of these streets would have been. Just across Springfield Road on the right is an overgrown site where Riverside School once stood.
The picture on the right shows the badly overgrown site where Riverside school once stood.
This site is to be re-developed as part of the Athletes' Village for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 in Glasgow.
Hopefully the creation of this village will give the very much neglected East End of Glasgow the boost it greatly deserves.

Hi, Brian!

What a terrific offer. I'd love to see photos of the old housing
scheme and primary school, however I believe all have been razed.

Here's a little background info. I attended the catholic primary
called Elba Lane Elementary School (a series of wooden huts that
looked like old WWI barracks) located somewhere behind your beautiful
school structure on London Road. I attended Elba Lane 1939 till 1941
(approximately). Elba Lane Nursery must have come at a much later date.

In 1941 at age seven I graduated to another school building called The
Hall. It appeared to be a converted stage hall across the street from
(and ownedf) by St. Michael's Church and its adjoining honest-to-god
regular looking school building. I've forgotten street names, but
Salamanca Street comes to mind (off Westmuir Street). Later I
attended Our Lady and St. Francis Senior Sec.

I lived in the housing schemes across from Riverside Senior
Secondary. Behind the tenements (senior citizens home) that faced
Riverside School was a street named Gretna St. and across from it was
Boness Street. I lived at 45 Boness Street. Other street names were
Gales St., and Budden St.
