Old Photo Of Newlands Primary School

I was recently sent this old black and white photo of Newlands Primary School which is the one I attended as a child.
It is situated at the top of Springfield Road near Parkhead Cross and the Gallowgate.
The building is still there, but is no longer used as a school. It is now used by Social Services.
.
See the NEWLANDS link below for more modern views of the building.

Another Photo Request Floods In.

ANOTHER REQUEST FOR FREE PHOTOS HAS FLOODED IN
I received a request for photo's of the Barrowfield area just across the road from Celtic park. Several streets were mentioned, including, Gretna St, Boness St, Buddon St, and Gailes St. Sadly all of the housing in this area is now gone. This photo was taken looking north up Springfield Road towards London Road and Celtic Park.
The piece of open ground on the left is where all of these streets would have been. Just across Springfield Road on the right is an overgrown site where Riverside School once stood.
The picture on the right shows the badly overgrown site where Riverside school once stood.
This site is to be re-developed as part of the Athletes' Village for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 in Glasgow.
Hopefully the creation of this village will give the very much neglected East End of Glasgow the boost it greatly deserves.

Free Glasgow East End Photo's

I am going to try a wee experiment here....
I am offering to try and take pictures of specific buildings, locations or places in and around
Parkhead and the East End of Glasgow.
All you have to do is e-mail me the specific location of the photograph that you would like me to take, and maybe say a wee bit about why you would like that particular photo. I will then do my best to take the requested photo as soon as I can manage it.
I will then e-mail the photo directly to you, and if I think it will be of general interest, I will also post it on this Blog page. I am thinking that it will be appreciated by ex pats and former citizens of the East End of Glasgow who want to know what a specific place looks like now ! You can link to my e-mail via my profile on the right hand side (Brian Charlton) Admin Team.

Edward Charlton

My older brother, Eddie also went to Newlands primary.
He was born in 1947 so would have started in Newlands in about 1952. or in 1953.

I have found some of his group photos from Newlands :-

This photo was taken in Newlands Primary around 1958 and Eddie Charlton is the 2nd from the right in the back row. If you recognise yourself or others, please let me know !

This photo was taken a bit earlier,
probably about 1955 ? and Eddie is
the 2nd from the left on the back row.

Me at Newlands Primary School

Hello all, my name is Brian Charlton I was born in 1950 and I went to Newlands primary from 1955 to 1962. I have searched high and low but can't find any of my group photos at Newlands. This single photo was taken (I think) round about 1961 at Newlands. If I look as if I am peering a bit, it is because I have been short sighted since birth and have worn specs almost all my life, but my mother always made me take them off for photo's. I think she was embarassed that she could not afford decent ones so I had the standard National Health (Harry Potter) type. Either that or she thought they made me look a bit glaikit !

My earliest memory is that I went to nursery school in a little wooden building in a lane behind Newlands school. It was called Elba Lane.
I was in Parkhead the other day and took a wee walk along to where I thought the lane used to be, and believe it or not - It is still there, and even more amazingly, so is the nursery. I will try to get some photos of it some time.
